In the next instalment of our 'Meet The Team' series, we introduce Britney Campion, Software Engineer at Sport:80.

Britney, tell us a bit about yourself!

"I was a maths nerd from age 0, and I studied maths for a year in my hometown, Leeds, before switching to AI and Computer Science in Sheffield, where I ended up sticking around.

"Through the years, I’ve dabbled in different sports like gymnastics, hockey, canoeing, and rugby. Nowadays I rotate between running, gym, bouldering, and pole fitness as my main hobbies, but I still like to try new activities every so often! One I’ve enjoyed recently is stand up paddleboarding.

"Outside of academics and sport, I really enjoy travelling, especially solo. I’m grateful to be well-travelled, and my solo journeys include Australia, Barcelona, the Alps, and Italy!"

What are some of your main duties at Sport:80?

"Backend development! I wouldn’t pretend to know the complete scope of my role yet – I’m not even a month in - but the work I’ve done so far includes integrating third-party services with our own, or improving the services we already provide!

"Just picture the nitty-gritty basement dev work, no pretty website design. I’m the behind-the-scenes gremlin."

Tell us a bit about your interests!

"I really enjoy trying different things! I enjoy the odd hike and wild swimming - just doing anything that gets me off my chair. I’ve recently been doing a bit of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I’ve been trying to challenge myself to grow, whether that be my views, or tackling my fears (like heights!)"

Who is your favourite sports team/athlete?

"I actually don’t enjoy sitting down and watching sports too often, I prefer to do stuff myself.

"I enjoy watching MMA, but my favourite inspirations are mostly hybrid athletes - people I can look at to help me strive to achieve goals in different areas of health and fitness."

What's your favourite sporting memory?

"Doing my first - and only (so far) - marathon in 2022, I loved doing the training in the rain or even on holiday."

Favourite pasta shape?

"Conchiglie – because it holds sauce so well!"

What three people would you sit around the table at your ideal dinner party?

"Hard one! I’m not really a celebrity person, and I was always raised with a big family emphasis.

"Given that, I’d probably pick my maternal grandparents and my mum, at a steakhouse. Call it morbid or a cop-out, but I think it’d at least make my mum happy, and that’s good enough for me!"

Knife, fork, spoon. If you could only use two for the rest of your life, which two, and why?

"If the knife is a butter knife, then fork and spoon. If it’s a steak knife, I'm definitely skipping the spoon. Liquids can be slurped, but realistically you need to be able to pick things up and make them smaller."

If you could instantly master any sport, what would it be?

"I think mastering a sport would take away the majority of my enjoyment. I really love being a beginner and seeing the quick progression - stalling makes me lose interest.

"That being said, I would love to be a better swimmer!"

What's something you don't like, that everybody else does?

"Watching or following sports. I’ll watch UFC now and again, but that’s it."

What would your ideal superpower be?

"Teleportation - it would save so much time and money."

What’s your all-time favourite movie?

"Brother Bear."

What’s a sporting event on your bucket list?

"I’d love to do an Ironman!"
